Dogs and cats seem to have equal status in Thailand. There are soi dogs on many of the sois. Soi is the Thai word for street. Here is a pic of 3 of the soi dogs on soi 22. There are actually about 5 dogs in this pack and they are human friendly but all shit breaks out if a strange dog comes into the soi.
The dogs eat fairly well as they are fed by the street vendors and residents who live along the soi. Dogs get pregnant from time to time and I have yet to figure out what happens to the pups. I never see pups on the street. I tend to believe they get adopted because they are cute as all puppies are.
The dogs above have quite a few scars from fights with stray street dogs that invade their turf.
There are many dogs in the village as they are used as guard dogs. They do not bother the free range chickens that walk everywhere. If the dog misbehaves or is vicious, it disappears and a new dog appears. Thavorn told me they do not get killed or eaten but simply end up on a farm somewhere else. Not sure what to believe. Here is a pic of a typical village dog.
Most village dogs look like coyotes. This particular village dog used to have a mamma but she disappeared. This dog has also subsequently disappeared and has gone to a farm because it fought with other village dogs and neighbors complained. They are definitely viewed as working dogs and are not considered or treated as pets.
There are many dogs in the village but I have yet to see a cat. In the city, I seem to see as many cats as dogs.
