A Parallel Universe

Today's song is: Witch Woman  .. Eagles

There is lots of literature available on men availing themselves of sex within the sex-tourism industry, none of which would be considered positive. The main topic seems to be exploitation of women by men. I have mentioned many times that the exploitation is both ways and mainly driven by the economies of the countries involved. I have also mentioned that it is hard to exploit and traffic women who own the latest iPhone 6 or Samsung Note. These women are there by economic choice. They are not much different than the economic migrants trying to get into the EU, looking for a better life.

I have also mentioned I have seen an increase in women tourists in Thailand and I suspect they also pay for play whether it be the massage houses or beer bars.

The Stickman Weekly is an excellent historical account of life in Thailand since 2002. Most of the articles come from Stick's loyal readers and a recent article piqued my interest. I have known for quite some time that North American women play in the sex-tourism industry in the Caribbean Islands but I did not know the extent that EU women play within the African Countries.

The above URL is an interesting read of a firsthand experience of a male tourist in Gambia. Here is a short extract from it:

'As will be well known to readers of this site, male sex tourism is usually associated with South East Asia. Some poor fellows have even been labelled as predators, preying on poor innocent ill-educated farm girls who have been forced into the oldest profession in the world through force of economic circumstance. However the flip side of this same coin, namely female-driven sex tourism is very much alive, albeit veiled, with little or nothing reported about it. Perhaps it's even seen as harmless and too small an issue to be reported? European women also embark on such expeditions – not to SE Asia – but rather Africa! Thus the reason for the many single and aging European women that I had seen around the hotel pool. Like their male Asian bound counterparts they hunt individually and in packs, populating the many bars that apparently survive on the patronage of both male and female sexual adventure seekers.

The women that I saw around the pool on Sunday were all similar clones of each other. They were middle-aged, mostly overweight, conventionally unattractive and therefore mostly past their sell-by date. I suspect that most were divorced, or had at least experienced failed relationships back in the suburbia's of Northern Europe. But as I was to learn later that week they were all here with one objective in mind – to be serviced, pampered and to get laid by a young black African. Given their age, looks and circumstances that was simply never going to happen 'back home'. I suspect that in all honesty, they were probably all lonely and just looking for companionship, but end up in consensual sexual relationships with the understanding that goods and money will be exchanged for services rendered. Is it then any different from a male going to South East Asia seeking the same thing … P4P – what's the difference?'

It ends with an interesting question, 'What is the difference?' and why has the media and the many NGO's not picked up on this. I do believe there is a double standard in the world when it comes to reporting on sex tourism. I complement these ladies in getting out and enjoying themselves in the latter part of their sexual lives. Do read the young black male's answer to how he feels about servicing the cougars that descend on his little part of the world. It is enlightening and similar to what many Thai girls working in the industry believe, at least the younger ones.

Many older Thai women (over 30) are fed up with their Thai males and just want someone they can count on to earn a decent wage, not get drunk every second night and beat up on them, and fool around on them. They seek respite from all that in the arms of a farang. The difference is, they are looking for a permanent relationship, not a hook up for a few nights. It is both cultural and economic.

Saturday Night

Today's song is: Wonderful Tonight  .. Eric Clapton  .. One of my favorite songs  ..

I try to make Saturday night night my preferred night out, whether with Thavorn, or one of my buddies. I headed out at 4 pm for Country Road to play some pool and wait for my buddy Arthur to meet up with me at Country Road about 7 pm. I walked up Soi 22 and stopped by to say hello to Phai, a new friend, and see how she is doing in 'Crazy Girls'. She seems to be doing very well and her English is better every time I talk to her. Thai women seem to have a knack for languages.

I arrived at Country Road to find it quite busy for 5 pm. All the pool tables were in play so I had to wait. I ordered a pitcher of Singha, my preferred beer in Thailand, and sat outside to watch the lovely ladies arriving for their evening shift at the various bars. As the sun dropped, the neon lights remained off and you could not hear any music, but the tourists were alive and well.

Eventually a pool table opened up and I played with my usual partner Dum, who is a 55 year old Thai woman, who used to have a Farang BF, but he passed away some time ago at 63 years of age.  Being 66, that makes you start to wonder  ...  I played my worst possible game ever and lost it, but won the next 2 and then got bumped because a couple of tourists wanted to play, and they're being male, I opted out of the winner staying and the new person challenging and let them play with themselves (sounds kind of rude) which is what most duos want to do anyways.

Back outside, with the remainder of my pitcher in tow, I resumed watching the pretty ladies arriving for work.  I texted a few friends and in due course Arthur arrived and after a round of 'Up to you' we decided to visit bars in Soi Cowboy that one of us had never been to. I suggested Shark bar and off we went.

Shark bar was booming inside and they play great dance music and the ladies actually seem to enjoy themselves which gives it a very fun atmosphere.Around about 8 pm, Tacky, Thavorn's best friend arrived and joined us for a beer in between dancing sets. She found Arthur quite handsome for an older gentleman. Tacky prefers them really young!

We got locked into Shark bar when the skies let loose with a deluge of rain that lasted 90 minutes and we were left to entertaining 3 dancers and Tacky which proved to be quite a bit of fun. When the rain let up a bit, Bacarra was our next stop and after a walk through I said to Arthur that I really did not want to pay for the over priced beer (no happy hour) and the dancers with no smiles and little personality which the predominantly Japanese clientele sees to like.

We crossed Soi Cowboy and headed into Suzie Wongs and sat down and ordered 2, 180 baht beer and and I reflected on Suzie Wong being a poor showing to what it formerly was. Two mama-sans that I know dropped by and I commented on how chubby the ladies were and they stated that they can't run their popular girl on girl shows or body painting and therefore there was little traffic and most of their girls moved onto other bars where they can do better. Needless to say, we left quickly.

Next stop on our tour was Toy bar which used to be very hands on but seems to not be any longer. Instead, they have some Coyote dancers which were fun and entertaining but needed to be bar fined for 3,000 baht before other negotiations were underway. Needless to say, they do not get bar fined often, and the girl I was having fun with offered to go for free just to get out and party for a night. I don't understand how bars can get away with pimping the girls out at 3,000 a bar fine. Just not fair to the girl, as she does all the work. I neglected to ask if the Coyote dancers were agency girls on loan or were in the employ of Toy Bar.

Arthur and I agreed he was not missing out on any bars, other than Shark bar so we decided to go to the tried and true 'Crazy House' which is at the end of Soi Cowoy at Soi 23 and there was a mini lake there (because of the deluge) that I splashed through in my sandals whereas Arthur, for some reason, had decided to wear his new sneakers which squished for the remainder of the evening. Unfortunately, Crazy House has not been permitted to reopen yet, so we headed off on the BTS to the Magic Table and later on, the Beer Garden.

By this time, we were well into the suds and vodka Red Bulls, and don't recall much about transpired next (or perhaps sworn to secrecy).

However, being the good boy that I am, I was home by 11:30 pm with 2 bbq'ed quarter chicken legs and some sticky rice, which I devoured before nodding off to sleep by about 12:30 am. All in all, a quiet Saturday night in the City of Angeles.

Bummer :-(

Today's song is: Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress  .. Hollies 1975

My alarm went off at 7 am and I had a quick coffee, shower, and placed a call to GrabTaxi and booked a taxi. I like GrabTaxi as I don't waste time flagging down taxis and trying first to communicate in English and then convince the driver to take me to where he is really not sure I want to go. Once my taxi is booked, they invariably call to ask for specific direction to pick me up. At that point, I pass my phone to Thavorn who explains everything in detail in Thai, so there are never any issues when the taxi arrives.

The traffic was bad this morning. The ride to the Government Complex which houses the immigration department can be as short as 25 mins or as long as 75 mins and today was a 75 minute ride. I amused myself by reading the news across many news outlets on my phone.

I arrived in due course and document in hand went to pick up my queue number, reaching into my pocket for my passport and had an 'Oh-Shit' moment as I realized it was back at home, safe and sound, in my new Oakley pouch that I carry it in, along with my glasses. WTF, I thought, got angry, and then decided being pissed off, would only prolong the anger and decided to chalk it up to being careless and promising myself to double check from here on in.

I got into another taxi and decided to go to the BTS station at Mo Chit because I was earlier, going home than usual, and would still hit the morning incoming traffic into Bangkok.  I was there in 25 mins, because the traffic was still bad, but once on the MRT (underground, same terminus as the BTS) I was at Asoke and Sukhumvit in 10 mins. Mass transit in Bangkok is great!

By now, I was hungry at had breakfast at McDonalds, just catching the breakfast menu at 10:55 am. I then walked home and Thavorn was glad that I was back , but even gladder that I was not grumpy!

Tomorrow morning I will repeat the whole trip again, but this time hopefully complete my goal of registering my 90 day stay in Thailand. I will have to adjust my gym schedule as well as I was planning to go tomorrow morning but will now go this afternoon. Thavorn and I will probably head out for some fun on Friday night and then my friend Arthur and I will head out for a beer and some conversation on Saturday night.

Kids in Tow

Today's song is: Piece of my Heart  .. Janis

October is school holidays for many Thai children and a time when many bar girls head back to the village to visit their children and more often than naught, bring them back for a week in Bangkok. The grandmother often comes for the week as well.

Soi 22, has a more family atmosphere than the other red light districts in Bangkok which really have none, except for afternoons in Hillary 4 on Nana and Country Road in Soi Cowboy where you can sit and have a beer with your kid on your lap or if older, perched on a stool. On Soi 22, our son Jaidan is known my name to most street vendors, motorcycle taxi boys, massage girls and bar staff. Whenever I head out alone I always get, 'Where Jaidan?' or if both Thavorn and I are out together, 'Who look after Jaidan, where you go?'. Thais always want to know where you are going!

Thavorn's two kids have been with us for a couple of weeks now, and the urchins are getting better and better at acting in a civilized manner, eating at a table, sitting on a chair properly, please and thank you, and cleaning up after themselves. At times it has been a struggle, but progress is being made. The staff in our apartment building all seem to quite enjoy the 3 kids, Tai, Dun, and Jaidan.

This afternoon, Tacky's 2 children and a cousin are visiting us at the moment. I put Mr. Bean on YouTube and they are all flaked out on the bed, after an hour splashing and swimming in the pool. For some reason Mr. Bean is extremely popular with Thai children, even in English, but then again, all Thais seem to love slap stick. I should put the stooges on for them :-)

Tomorrow I have to head over to the Government Complex near Don Muang airport to complete my 90 day reporting period. Despite having a one year retirement visa, I still have to report where I am living and the fact that I am still in the country. This eats up the whole day and I could pay some firm to do it for me, but I enjoy watching people from all over world congregating at the complex which is huge.

Visas

Today's song is: White Room  .. Cream

A bar girl friend of mine recently met a nice Canadian man online who subsequently came to Thailand to meet with her in person and subsequently 'fell' for the young lady and once back in Canada after his week long vacation, bought an air ticket for the young lady as he wanted her to visit Canada for 2 weeks and meet his family. Now there is lots 'wrong' here, that I could discuss at length but it is a very common story and usually does not end well, although I would guess in 10% of the cases it can make for a happy ending (no pun intended).

What I want to discuss is what the young lady was expected to accomplish. I asked her if she had ever flown or been to an airport. The answer was 'no'. I give her credit for having the courage to fly around the world (Toronto) by herself, with no experience, and little command of the English language.

The next question was, 'Do you have a visa?'. To which, she replied that she had gone to a place on Soi 13 with a Thai friend to apply for a tourist visa to Canada. I had previously heard about Thai girls applying for visa's to other countries and I imagine their success rate is abysmal. I think this is a really bad scam to collect a fee for a process that is doomed for failure.

The young lady told me she expected an answer back in 1 or 2 weeks and sure enough, this week she got her rejection notice. Now, what these firms do not tell you, is once you have a rejection on file, it is much more difficult to get an acceptance. To get a visa  .. Go to the appropriate embassy and apply there!

What does Canada want from an applicant? They want to make sure you are going to be a visitor, not someone who gets in, and then manipulates the system to become a permanent resident or work illegally in Canada. Canada is one of the few countries in the world who do not track you when you leave. So, once in, unless you run a foul of some law, or become noticed, you are good to stay.

Secondly, they want to make sure you have sufficient funds in your bank account (for some time) to support yourself while in Canada. They also want to know why you are going (letters of invitation, visit a friend, etc.).

Most importantly they want to know you are a person of outstanding character and not someone who may be a threat to the country, or worse yet, work in the shadows as a hooker, stripper, etc.). Canada's gate keepers probably see themselves as the moral guardians of the country.

By now, you can probably see how, 'I want to visit my boyfriend from a one week stand in Bangkok and BTW, I work as a bar girl and have no reported income.' would not necessarily get you an acceptance.

I know from experience how hard it is to get visas to Canada from my experience with my 2 Russian friends. Russians are probably harder to get visas for. I managed to get visas for both of my Russian friends, 2 tourist visas, one of which was turned into an educational visa. Both of my friends respected the terms of their visas and subsequently returned to Malaysia where they both appear to be happy and gainfully employed.

I suppose it is necessary to have this gate-keeping system in place. I just wish the visa bureaucracy would give a reason why you get refused rather than a 'rejected' notice. There needs to be more transparency to the process but I suppose they would not want to be accused of profiling :-)

After all, we would not want Canada to be overrun by bar girls from Thailand. That would be shocking! Truth be told, most Thais are forever tied to their country and do not want to live in another country for any length of time. However, there are lots of stories and I know about 4 or 5 where bar girls and their partners are living happily ever after in her newly adopted country. The guys are even happier :-)

If you want to read more on the topic of visas this is a good read.

Back in the Gym

Today's Song is: Turn the Page .. Waylon Jennings

Thavorn and I headed out for some bar hopping on Thursday night to find out if much has changed in a week.  We started off walking down Soi 22 and there is still no music being played at the bars, but the bars were busy as usual. We walked over to Country Road on Soi Cowboy and it was a little bit busy, but traffic on Cowboy itself was down and all the bright neon lights were turned off.  The live bands at bot bars at the end of Cowboy were both MIA and won't be back until the 30 day mourning period is over. I hope the band members had put a little bit of money in the bank to eat with during the month.

We headed up Cowboy to Shark bar to visit Tacky and once inside, it was business as usual with loud music being pumped out. Lots of customers, but mostly young Japanese and Korean male tourists. We stayed and chatted with Tacky for an hour or so and then headed home, picking up some street food (chicken feet) along the way. We found Jaidan still awake and my new glasses broken, but hopefully fixable with superglue.

Yesterday was my first visit to the gym and it was great. The gym has every machine available and the locker room has private showers, shampoo, body wash, hair driers, q-tips, etc. I think I will go every day while Thavorn's children are here to lose the 3 kilos I gained since coming back to Bangkok, but also for some peace and quiet :-)

Thavorn is a bit bored and when pressed, stated that it would be great to have a vehicle of some sorts so she could go back and forth to the village to visit her mom and friends once a month. It will be something to look into in the new year.

So, life in Bangkok, as usual, goes on in some semblance of what it usually is. The nightlife in Bangkok is resilient and meets some primal need to cut loose and indulge in your own 'Hangover 2' experience.

I Finally Caved .. gym

Today's song is: Grand Illusion  .. Styx

I have been without a gym for 3 years now, since we moved from CG casa, which had a gym, to Charming Resident which does not. I was going to use the money we saved on the rent to pay for a gym membership but I have resisted because gym memberships are quite expensive (meaning more expensive than Canada), but then again the last time I paid gym fees, they were $550 a year at Steve Nash in Canada and no doubt those prices have gone up.

I sat down to negotiate and the membership for a year started out at 26,000 baht or $975 CDN. I eventually got him down to 19,000 Baht or 712 CDN and that was for 12 months plus 2 months free at the end of the year. However, I had a bad experience when I paid for Holiday Fitness for a year and they went belly up after 6 months so I did not want to pay for a year up front but wanted a monthly payment.

I eventually settled for 1,900 Baht a month with the remainder of October free for a yearly total of 22,800 Baht or $855 CDN. The other benefit of paying month is the Canadian dollar is quite low no and if it goes up over the year, my actual costs decrease.

The gym itself is quite good.  http://www.truefitness.co.th/en/facilities/exchange-tower and it is not very busy during the mornings and afternoons which is when I will use it. The benefit to the afternoon is there is quite a bit of eye candy working out as the bar girls are awake and the fit ones stay fit in the gym, before showering and heading off to work.  I will let you know if my initial observations are correct.

I plan to workout the 5 workdays and take the weekend off, but that could change. :-)
