When all is said and done, all life leaves us is memories. If you have ever tried to relive a memory you discovered it is not the same, and will never be the same.
No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.
Heraclitus had it right in 470 BC and it remains true today. Where am I going with this?
Two things, the PC would change 'man' to 'person' and I am okay with that. Secondly, I reflect on my 10 years in Thailand and think about whether or not it will be the same when I finally get back in the summer of 2021. There is no doubt that many of my favourite bars will be gone as well as the ladies who I befriended in those bars. Ditto for my ex pat friends. Some may never return and I will be left with memories.
Memories are triggered by many things such as a dream or more often than not, a song that recalls a good time. A favourite song of mine is by Pink ...
Just Give Me a Reason
This is the song that brings back memories of my first 3 outings with my wife Thavorn. Outings, not dates, as they were not planned but just happened. We spent those outings in Hillary 2 on Soi 4 (Nana) and thankfully, it has so far survived the covid -19 closures. Hillary 4 has not and it will be missed as Thavorn, Jaidan and I spent many afternoons there sitting at the rail watching the tourists and lifers walk by.
The staff knew us by sight and had watches Jaidan evolve form a 3 month old strapped to my chest to a 5 year old chatting in Thai to them .
When I arrive back in Thailand next summer, I will try to step back into the river and I hope I will not be disappointed. Life is what you make of it and you have to put yourself out there and embrace it and keep creating those memories ...
